TOP SELECTION: 7. FRENCH MELODY (Matthew Dunn/Brandon Lerena; 57kg & barrier 9) -we open the new turf season with a testing maiden at set weights on another surface likely to stay in heavy range. Like this 4YO mare by prolific sire Maurice on debut for a leading NSW country stable. Close up in 2 recent trials; bred to get through wet ground being out of a Captain Rio mare; and this emerges as a nice starting point drawn to stay well off the fence

RACE 2 @ 1.45pm: LISMORE PAINT CENTRE MAIDEN PLATE (1526m) – Set Weights; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 5. OCCUPATION (Matthew Dunn/Nick Heywood; 59kg & barrier 3) -still with the maidens at set weights; but out to a middle distance; and in a very moderate affair rating clear on top is this progressive & lightly raced 4YO by Wootton Bassett from the same stable as in the opening race. Was well outclassed on debut at Eagle Farm; but came back to a maiden at Grafton 3 weeks ago & roared home from near last to be beaten under a length. Carries the same weight here in a thinner race; drawn to settle closer over a bit more ground; and only has to handle the going to take care of these

RACE 3 @ 2.25pm LISMORE FLOOR COVERINGS BENCHMARK 58 HCP (2110m) – Min Weight 55kg; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 5. DIVINE EFFORT (Samantha McGuren/Ms Grace Palmer a3kg; 55kg & barrier 2) -now much further out in trip for the restricted stayers; and in a very even & open affair; it shapes best at the value for this very honest & improving 5YO by Divine Prophet who finds a suitable race well into his campaign. Was beaten under 3 lengths in a handy CL1 at Grafton 2 starts back before being freshened. Then tracked the speed & missed by a whisker in a similar race 3 weeks ago. Drawn to get a soft run behind the speed; was placed in heavy ground early in the prep; and emerges as the best weighted runner after the jockey’s 3kg claim

RACE 4 @ 3.05pm JOCKEYS CELEBRATION DAY MAIDEN HCP (1310m) – Min Weight 55kg; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 2. GRAFTING (Matthew Dunn/Nick Heywood; 58.5kg & barrier 11) -the maidens again lock horns over a sprint trip; and in a race with plenty of chances; very keen at the value to back this lightly raced 4YO by Justify returning for a 2nd campaign behind a 24 week break. Another one from the leading regional stable in NSW who was competitive enough in his 1st prep & has been fitted with 2 quiet trials. This is the same distance over which he debuted at Ballina; and he has reportedly come on well since then. Drawn to stay out in likely much better ground; and bred to handle wet tracks

RACE 5 @ 3.40pm PJ’S FRUIT & VEG COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1110m) – Min Weight 55kg; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 2. PATRIOTICINTENTION (Samantha McGuren/Ms Grace Palmer a3kg; 58.5kg & barrier 6) -up significantly in grade here for a competitive & wide open sprint; and rating on top is a tough & consistent 7YO by global Group 1 winner Starspangledbanner. Won two in succession at Port up to CL3 level  in heavy going back in May; both times finishing best from midfield. Was then close-up against similar opposition on a bottomless Heavy 10 before given a let-up; then powered home from well back to be beaten under 2 lengths in a much deeper CL6 over the Grafton carnival. Never raced better; has only missed a place once from 8 starts on heavy; and emerges as one of the best weighted runners after the jockey’s claim

RACE 6 @ 4.15pm METROLL CLASS 2 HCP (1310m) – Min Weight 55kg; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 7. MEADOWBROOK (Daiki Chujo/Noriyuki Masuda; 57.5kg & barrier 4) -over a furlong further here for a good class battle; and in another deep race with several chances; it shapes nicely for this honest & under-rated 5YO mare by Tivaci who is well placed 4th-up on a 10-day turnaround. Beat all but the winner in 2 runs on rain-affected ground before being beaten under 3 lengths in a tougher race at Grafton when forced to come through a slower part of the track. Gets a significant weight drop here with a stronger jockey taking over; and boasts a solid record on wet tracks

RACE 7 @ 4.50pm OUR KIDS BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1526m) – Min Weight 55kg; Apprentices Can Claim:

TOP SELECTION: 3. KEEP IT LOKI (Tony & Maddysen Sears/Ben Looker; 60.5kg & barrier 8) -we wrap a competitive betting meeting with the restricted middle distance gallopers in another very open affair; and confident this progressive 5YO by Headwater can cross the border & go back-to-back deep into the campaign. Charged home to miss narrowly in consecutive races across Sth East Qld before sailing home from the back to claim a BM 58 on the Gold Coast synthetic. Looking for this slightly longer trip now; and he’s right at home in heavy going being out of a Sebring mare. Still lightly raced heading into his 18th start; and a senior jockey taking over is a further plus
